Case Study: Deeside pumping station refurbishments
|
Contract Scope:
The Environment Agency operates a network of hundreds of land-drainage pumping stations across the UK. These plants, often in remote locations, are called upon when their local area is threatened by flooding: large volumes of water are moved away from vulnerable areas and eventually out to sea.
These valuable systems spend most of their lives standing by. But when they are called upon, they need to be ready and reliable.
To ensure continuing reliability, and in the face of recent high-profile weather events, the Environment Agency chose the Boulting Group to undertake a series of three pumping-station upgrades at key sites in North Wales. This involved electrical, control, civil and mechanical upgrades, with major pump replacements at one of the sites.
The Boulting Group assumed the role of principal contractor, working with civil and mechanical partners in order to offer the turnkey package required.
Implementation of the major outage was challenging: it involved carefully planning temporary pumping around the works while the watercourse was dammed to enable new equipment to be installed, with one eye on rainfall predictions from the Met Office.
