Case Study: Film coating facility
|
Contract Scope:
The Boulting Group carried out the complete design and construction of new IS0 6 & 7 cleanrooms within an existing portal-framed building.
Acting as designer and principal contractor under the CDM regulations, we were responsible for health and safety for the complete project, including supervising and co-ordinating the installation of the client's equipment.
This equipment was built into the fabric of the new construction and required close co-ordination between all disciplines.
As the specialist design and build contractor, our work included design, construction, commissioning and validation for the complete turnkey project.
The building was in use by laboratory staff during the construction works, which required careful planning and communication throughout the contract period to ensure that the occupants experienced no disruption.
The internal fit-out comprised the erection of metal-stud partitioning to form the main IS0 6 cleanroom, together with an ISO 7 maintenance room and all associated airlocks and changing areas, designed to allow the correct flow of personnel and materials through the facility. Internally, the floors were finished with welded vinyl, coved and capped. The walls were finished with a high-quality hegenic coating.
The ceiling construction inorporated a walk-on deck for use as a maintenance platform.
The HVAC system incorporated a single air-handling unit to carry out all necessary heating, cooling and filtration of the air supply. Air is re-circulated and mixed with fresh air to provide the required room pressurisation. Supply air conditions are controlled to closely maintain environmental conditions within the suite.
Power, lighting, HVAC control and fire alarm systems were provided as part of the new electrical distribution system and a nitrogen alarm system was installed and commissioned as a late addition to the project scope.
The completed facility was fully commissioned and operational validation was carried out in the form of particle count measurements.
