Gen-Probe European expansion enters second phase

Gen-Probe Incorporated is a global leader in the development, manufacture and marketing of diagnostic products and services. BES, with support from Boulting E&I, completed the first Phase of this refurbishment project earlier this year, which will increase the global leader's Wythenshawe facility by 49,000 sq ft.
The 24 week scheme focused on redeveloping and refurbishing existing laboratories and support offices on the first floor of the Manchester property. BES undertook the role of Designer and Principal Contractor to complete a full package of works, including the design and installation of all mechanical, electrical and HVAC services, together with the architectural fit out.
Moving on
The first phase of the project was completed in March 2011 and the BES team have confidently moved on to the more substantial Phase 2 - construction of new ground floor manufacturing facilities.
The new construction works will include:
- Complete strip out of the existing building
- Refurbishment to a revised layout
- Installation of new partitioning
- Internal fit out to fallow areas
The works include provision for all HVAC and process mechanical & electrical utilities required to enable the facility to be handed over in a fully operational state.
Scope of works
Architectural
- Construction of new laboratory areas
- Metal and stud partitions
- Epoxy paint finished vinyl floors and plasterboard ceilings
HVAC and Mechanical:
- Air Handling Units Chillers, Boilers and Compressors
- Duct and pipework routed throughout the ceiling
- All designed and installed to suit the new scheme
Electrical:
- New ring mains and new lighting installed throughout
- New generator to be supplied and installed
- Systems - Fire Alarm, data, access control, BMS and FMS
All systems will be tested and commissioned (validated where appropriate) and a number of areas will be classified to ISO 8 (class 100,000) Standard.
