Since August 2011 Boulting has been conducting a series of Arc Flash Incident Energy studies across five Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) power stations.
The U.S based Client operates several CCGT power stations across Europe, producing a total of 3,700 Megawatts of power to the National Grid. It built it's first CCGT site in the U.K. back in 1998 and since then the U.S. have introduced new legislation and standards for the protection of workers in the Electrical Industry from the effects of Arc Flash Incidents from electrical equipment.
At present there are only U.S. standards for Arch Flash protection in existence (in this case IEEE 1584 & NFPA 70E). As it is not yet law in the U.K. or Europe very few companies in the U.K. carry out this type of specialist study work.
However, as a responsible company, the Client required its European sites to be brought in line with U.S. legislation - even though it is not required by European law.
In March 2011 Boulting were invited to give a presentation to the Client's Senior Electrical Engineers, alongside three other consultancies who also had experience in Arc Flash Studies. The Boulting presentation came out on top and was praised for demonstrating a broad knowledge and experience of the subject matter.
Boulting were awarded the £132K, four month contract and work commenced in August 2011.
