The 23rd annual AZ Engineering SHE Awards took place at Alderley Park Cheshire in February to acknowledge top tier Health Safety and Environmental performance of engineering and construction both in UK and Overseas. All major suppliers were represented at the awards, which occupied the majority of the day. The format for the day is usually a guest speaker who presents two sessions targeting Operatives and Middle Management, followed by presentation of the awards based on performance during the year. In previous years speakers have included the Head of the UK Olympic Safety Committee talking about how Health and Safety was a key part of the Bid Concept, including the intent to raise the living standards and life expectancy of the London area population where the Olympic Park was cited. This was followed by how the Health and safety Culture was created within the Construction teams.
This year the format changed somewhat with Pinsent Masons presenting a Mock Trial, using solicitors and barristers to take the roles of Judge, defence and prosecution as well as witnesses. The case heard initially how the employer had failed to ensure his employee had the correct equipment and the necessary training. The event attendees effectively formed the jury and after the trial concluded were asked to debate numerous aspects of the trial and offer a verdict. What the case highlighted was the fact that employers and employees are both accountable for safety and only when they collaborate well together and communicate effectively do they achieve the desired safety culture.
Boulting's thanks are extended to AstraZeneca for once again delivering a World Class event acknowledging the excellent work during the year and continuing to develop and reinforce the relationships and SHE Culture within AstraZeneca.
