The Manufacturer Top 100 2018 publication, which celebrates 100 of the year’s most inspirational individuals working in UK industry, has named Glyn Shawcross, engineering and design director at Boulting Ltd, as one of its Inspiring Leaders.

Now in its fifth year, The Manufacturer Top 100 project, run by The Manufacturer magazine in partnership with Cranfield University, one of the country’s top centres of business education, publicly recognises the most dynamic leaders and innovators in manufacturing. Its goal is to help dispel popularly-held myths that vibrant manufacturing in the UK is a thing of the past.

Awardees are drawn from every walk of UK industry, from top floor to shop floor. They are selected from hundreds of nominations for the examples they set to young people aspiring to a career in industry. Those selected offer 100 unique and uplifting stories of struggle, grit, determination and success against all the odds and personal tales from individuals helping to change popular perceptions of careers in manufacturing and draw young people into sector.

Glyn, who has been awarded the title of Inspiring Leader in this year’s publication, joined Boulting in 2011 and has gained significant diverse experience within electrical/controls/instrumentation design and Engineering arena, across a spectrum of Industry sectors. Promoted to Boulting Ltd engineering & design director in 2018, he is responsible for the engineering & design department which delivers engineering and design services across all elements of the project lifecycle, from front-end design and detail design for construction to commissioning and validation. Under his leadership the department delivers M&E industry standard designs with specialisms in hazardous area compliance, high voltage engineering, functional safety engineering, 3D Modelling and BIM

Glyn is a registered functional safety engineer, Chartered Electrical Engineer & Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET) and using his 38 years’ experience undertakes voluntary work for the IET as a professional registration advisor (PRA) and a continuing professional development (CPD) advisor.

Glyn is engaged by Manchester Metropolitan University via its industry advisory board and is currently providing support to the institute of apprenticeships to help set the industry standards for qualifications of the future.

“With over three decades of experience in the industry, Glyn has a lot to share with those taking their first steps in the engineering industry,” said Josh Groarke, deputy managing director at Boulting Ltd.

“It’s fantastic to see Glyn’s dedication to developing the industry recognised and praised in The Manufacturer’s Top 100 and we hope he continues to inspire many more engineers in years to come.”

Nick Peters, editorial director of The Manufacturer and of The Manufacturer Top 100 report commented: “The individual stories in the report (available from www.themanufacturer.com) are a compelling reminder of how strong and vibrant UK manufacturing really is. We need to keep saying that, because as a nation we seem to harbour the notion that no one in the UK makes things anymore, and young people are discouraged from considering careers in manufacturing.

“The truth is we do make things — we are the world’s ninth largest manufacturing nation — and careers are very well paid. But there are too few skilled young people coming through the system. It is on behalf of that new generation that we do this. We want to break down the decades-old prejudice against manufacturing.

“We want parents to get excited about recommending a career in manufacturing to their offspring, not see it (so erroneously) as an occupation of last resort. We must not let the prejudices of yesterday poison the opportunities of tomorrow.”
